Should Feng Shui Be a Purchasing Consideration in Your Next Home?
Some buyers walk into a home and instantly feel at ease. The light lands perfectly, the layout flows, and before they've even opened a cupboard, it already feels like somewhere they could live.
Others walk into the exact same home and feel nothing at all, or simply feel like something isn't quite right without being able to explain why.

Whether or not you believe a home can influence your health, wealth or happiness, the underlying principle is difficult to dispute. The Basics: Mapping a Home's Energy
You don't need years of study to understand the fundamentals. Two key principles do most of the heavy lifting.
Energy flow (Chi) starts at the front door.
A clear, welcoming entrance is considered the point where positive energy enters the home. Anything that blocks or complicates that entry, such as clutter, awkward angles or a direct line from the front door straight out the back, is thought to allow good energy to escape before it has a chance to settle. Open, uncluttered pathways encourage energy to circulate naturally rather than stagnate in corners.
The Bagua map divides the home into life areas.
A simple nine-zone grid is overlaid onto the floor plan, with each section representing a different aspect of life, including career, relationships, health and prosperity. Traditionally, quieter areas suit bedrooms, central areas suit living spaces such as the kitchen and lounge, while the "wealth" corner, typically the rear left of the home relative to the entrance, is considered an ideal location for a study or home office.
From there, the recommendations become more subtle. Rounded furniture instead of sharp corners, mirrors to create a sense of space, indoor plants and natural materials, or positioning the bed so it isn't directly in line with the bedroom door.

This is where Feng Shui becomes relevant when you're buying.
Most principles fall into one of two categories.
Things you can change after settlement
Furniture placement, colour schemes, mirrors, plants, decluttering and even how you use each room can all be adjusted over time. These don't usually need to influence your purchasing decision.
Things built into the home
The location and orientation of the front entrance, the relationship between bedrooms and living spaces, the overall floor plan and even the shape of the block are structural features. They're difficult, expensive or impossible to change once you've bought the property.
